Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
