Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
